Inaugral Queensland Murri Court Conference 2008
The Bayside Community Justice Group of Cleveland (BCJG) is a community-led organisation committed to justice reform, cultural empowerment, and strengthening outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Redlands region. Established in 2006 by local Elders, BCJG was formed in response to the growing disengagement of First Nations young people in the Redlands, with a focus on providing a holistic and culturally grounded support model. Working alongside its aligned agency, COOEE Elders Inc (trading as COOEE Indigenous Family and Community Education Resource Centre), BCJG delivers culturally informed education, cultural reintegration, and community support initiatives that have engaged and supported more than 2,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and adults. BCJG’s collaborative work with the Murri Courts, Youth Justice, and local community organisations has contributed to reducing offending behaviours, supporting school re-engagement, and strengthening cultural, family, and community connections. The group is widely regarded as a strong example of community-led practice, demonstrating effective partnership approaches that centre cultural leadership, community engagement, and long-term positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We want to be a catalyst for positive change, and since our beginnings in 2006, we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our not-for-profit organisation upon: prevention, intervention and deterrence through support, empowerment, resilience building and progress.
